Notes: This book is a compendium of 185 complete scores of the tunes played by the early American musical clocks examined and discussed in the companion volume, Musical Clocks of Early America, 1730-1830. This book includes transcriptions of actual performances of many of the clocks. For those that no longer play, copies of the melodies from manuscript and printed sources of the period are included. Brief histories of the tunes and lyrics of the songs are also included. This book is indispensable for music historians and for clock conservators who seek to restore silent examples. These clocks brought the charm of popular music from the 18th and early 19th century into the homes of their owners. The tunes were chosen by the buyers for a reason. Some were recently composed, others were old favorites. They reflected political leanings, social aspirations, and even ancestry. Our understanding of the meaning of the tunes is important. These clocks are unique ?recordings? of the music from the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. They afford us the only opportunity to enjoy the exact music that our ancestors enjoyed, not an interpretation of the same tune played by present-day musicians, but the exact notes heard 200 years ago. See the companion volume devoted to the clocks, their makers and the cases that house them. Kate Van Winkle Keller is an internationally recognized authority of early American music and dance.
