Notes: A pedagogical experiment to study the frequency spectral composition of the pendulum motion as a function of its amplitude is described. The angle is measured with a very simple apparatus, whose major components are an x-y recorder and a one-turn helipot. In order to obtain the frequency spectrum, a pocket calculator is used to Fourier transform the data by means of the discrete Simpson's appproximation. The period is determined directly from the angle versus time plot with an accuracy of a few parts in 10^3.
